Californian Cuisine: Gregoire’s in May
Gregoire’s
2109 Cedar Street
Berkeley, CA 94709
I went here with one of my oldest friends, Frances. This place epitomizes Berkeley food culture. It is small, but intelligent. Fast, local, and fresh. Innovative, with (French) roots, in both food and their custom designed boxes. The to-go style facilitates the laid-back culture and promotes impromptu picnics in the beautiful sun. The menu also changes monthly, and keeps up with seasonal produce = best of Californian Bay food with French flair. Lunch is more afforable, and it’s the place that everyone, including myself, recommends.
CRISPY POTATO PUFFS!!
The Berkeley location (also in Oakland) is based in a small white kitchen parked around the corner from other famed Gourmet Ghetto establishments, such as Chez Panisse, Cedar, Cheeseboard, to name a few. The menu changes every month to stay current with the freshest, seasonal local produce, and has separate lunch and dinner options. For dinner, Frances and I ordered the Crispy Potato Puffs, for which Gregoire’s is famous for… which is always served in their custom take out boxes… and the Sautéed Florida Rock Shrimp & Pesto with Fusilli Pasta…
… the Grilled Cajun Marinated Chicken Filet, with Honey Citrus Sauce
… and ended with the fresh Poached Pear Fold!
It’s so light and flaky… piping hot with two layers for filling: one of the poached pear, and below, a little layer of custard!
